Marti Plager creates her art utilizing primarily
hand dyed cotton fabric, sewing the shapes and
colors together and then adding the final layer
of texture with the quilting stitches. On "Journeys
and Memories," she says, "While living
in Louisville, I have become very aware of the
bridges crossing the river. The patterns they
make against the natural landscape fascinate
me and I notice these marks every time I drive
downtown. For me, the bridges have come to symbolize
the journey of life." Plager has exhibited
her work nationally as well as in Louisville
and elsewhere in Kentucky, including the prestigious
annual show of the American Quilters Society
in Paducah.
Plager grew up in Iowa and has lived in many
places throughout the United States. She now
makes Louisville, KY her home. She learned to
sew in 9th grade home economics class
and was a garment sewer for many years. She
has worked as the education manager for Simplicity
Pattern Company in New York and as a retail
fabric store manager in Florida. In Kentucky
Plager took her first quilting class and became
passionate over this form of creative textile
art. Using her sewing machine skill and expertise
she now works full time as a studio artist creating
contemporary wall quilts as her form of personal
expression.
