New Albany-Floyd County Secondary Schools Art Show and Competition
The Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, Indiana is proud to announce the opening of the 36th annual New Albany-Floyd County Secondary Schools Art Show and Competition. The exhibit will be on display May 2-17, 2008 during regular museum hours (Tuesday-Saturday 10 am-5:30 pm). There will be a reception for all the wonderful young artists in this exhibit and those who support and encourage them on Thursday May 15 from 6:30-8:00 pm with an awards presentation at 7:00 pm. This event is free and the public is invited to attend.
Since 1972, the NAFC Secondary Schools Art Show and Competition has been held each year for students in the Visual Arts classes. Each teacher juries and submits his or her own students’ work. The 360 or more pieces submitted are judged by a panel of professional artists and art educators. This is the only art show exclusively for the students of Floyd County and the only opportunity for many of these talented individuals to be in academic competition in the Visual Arts with their peers.
Fifty first place awards of $25 each (sponsored by donors to the Art Awards Fund) are awarded to 5 divisions (grades 8-12) in 10 categories: Drawing, Painting, Graphic Design, Mixed Media, Sculpture, Functional Ceramics, Commercial Art, Printmaking, Fiber Art, and New Media. The Art Awards Fund seeks to recognize and reward students, encourage them to excel in the visual arts, and help them develop as fully rounded adult members of the community. Visit www.artawardsfund.org for more information on the Art Awards Fund.
Seven Best in Show cash awards are given to one student in each grade (6-12). The awards for grades 6-7 are sponsored by the donors to the Art Awards Fund, and the awards for grades 8-12 are sponsored by the Arts Council of Southern Indiana. Special cash merit awards include the Amy Squires Abstract Painting Merit Award and the Carnegie Center for Art and History Merit Award. Each year a $50 Merit Award, sponsored by the Art Awards Fund, is given to the winner of the contest held in January for Best Poster Design. The winning poster is then used to advertise the art show.
The Art Awards Fund also sponsors five $10 awards for outstanding 6th grade entries, and ten $10 awards for outstanding 7th grade entries. $10 gift certificates for art supplies sponsored by Preston Arts Center, Inc. will be awarded to 3 outstanding works in each grade 8-12 and one work each in grades 6 and 7. Second, Third, Honorable Mention, and 6th and 7th grade First Place award winners will receive ribbons provided by the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corporation.
