Kids ages 6-8 and their grown-ups are invited to a family book reading, discussion, and art project reflecting on compassion, inclusion, and peace. Deedee Cummings, local author of eleven diverse children’s books, will read her book This is the Earth, a beautifully illustrated book about appreciating one another’s differences.

Cummings has spent more than two decades working within the family therapy and support field, and much of her writing shares her experiences of working with kids in therapeutic foster care. Cumming is passionate about creating picture, poetry, and workbooks that teach coping skills, compassion, and love and encourage mindfulness. Cummings is also the founder of Make a Way Media, It Pays to Read, and the Louisville Book Festival.

Follow the reading and discussion with a simple multicultural paper doll art project. Children will need one sheet of white paper, scissors, and crayons or colored pencils (make sure there is a variety of skin tones in the mix, please!) In preparation for the discussion, please ask your children to write a personal statement: What does peace mean to you?
